In a tragic chain of events during Thursday’s I-5 traffic congestion, four buses collided with one another, injuring eight passengers including one soldier who is reportedly in critical condition. The chain reaction was said to have been caused by a car coming to a quick stop in front of a Los Angeles County jail bus carrying 25 inmates. The jail bus attempted to stop quickly and was collided into by three Army buses traveling behind carrying Army personnel.
It is not uncommon for motorists to stop quickly and practice erratic driving patterns while traveling on I-5. California Highway Patrol is daily on scene investigating and cleaning up accidents all along I-5; often caused by distracted and aggressive drivers with little regard for other motorists in proximity to their vehicles.
Thursday’s accident took place south of Washington Blvd around midday according to Highway Patrol. Northbound lanes were completely closed for around 30 minutes Thursday afternoon while emergency response teams tried to sift to traffic in an effort to reach the injured passengers. Six military personnel were injured in the collision and one soldier remains in critical condition. Two L.A. County inmates were injured as well. No updates have been released on any current conditions of injured individuals.
While it is certainly a blessing that no fatalities took place in this particular accident, driver negligence is a rampant problem in Southern California and has lead to more injuries and fatalities than any other state in the United States. California reports an unmatched number of injuries and insurance claims each year due to the number of drivers colliding with one another on state freeways and highways.
