While we normally report on pedestrian accidents upon California roadways, it is also foreseeable that those engaging in recreational hiking activities are just as vulnerable to injury and death. Many parts of California offer remote access to mountainous regions perfect for camping, hiking and escaping the bustle of the busy Southern California lifestyle. As with any activity, it is vital to maintain the optimum prudence and care, even when seemingly miles away from danger.
A young man in his early 20’s was hiking the popular Eaton Canyon Park around dusk on Sunday evening. Inexplicably, the seasoned hiker slipped and fell 35 feet to his death around 6:30pm. The particular trail the victim was exploring is known for its breathtaking waterfalls and scenic surroundings. He was accompanied by three companies when he apparently lost his footing and slipped down the rocks.
He was taken to a local hospital immediately and was listed in critical condition. The medical team was saddened to report that he died a short time later, despite their best efforts to revive him.
This is the first fatality for Eaton Canyon in 2011. However, emergency responders are often called to the Canyon to treat broken bones, exhaustion and bites. Authorities insist that fatalities are rare on this popular hiking spot.
According to experts, the Eaton Canyon Trail is not a particularly difficult trail to navigate, but it is rocky in some parts and can present unstable conditions. Many hikers have set out to cross the Eaton Canyon and have turned back as they were unprepared for the challenge.
