With only a reasonable amount of caution and careful driving, many of the tragic and deadly accidents that occur around California’s highways and interstates. California is experiencing an epidemic of distracted driving as drivers are so dependent upon their smart phones and electronic devices that they cannot withstand the thought of leaving not checking texts and emails while driving. This coupled with the already-existing roadway risks of drunk driving place safe drivers in the minority.
A Pismo Beach weekend accident is likely due to drunken driving according to the latest reports from California Highway Patrol. The accident occurred Sunday afternoon on Highway 101 and blocked the highway for hours. Luckily, no one involved was killed but investigators confirm that one driver was arrested under a suspicion of driving under the influence. Several others involved were taken to local hospitals after sustaining non-life threatening injuries.
While we are always elated when an inevitable accident occurs without serious injury or death, sadly not every collision has such a desirable outcome. In another tragic accident on the Pacific Coast Highway this weekend, one female was killed and three others injured when a vehicle was reported to have careened off the edge of a cliff. Two other people were rushed to local hospitals with life-threatening injuries are remain clinging to life. California Highway Patrol reports that a large party with over 400 guests was taking place close by and over 50 vehicles were on scene. Investigators are still determining whether the incident is related to the party in any way.
In addition to widespread distracted driving and driving under the influence, hit-and-run fatalities are far too common around California. The body of a 30-year old female was found Sunday near an off ramp on Highway 78 and California Highway Patrol is asking for public assistance in determining the details surrounding the incident. Officials are certain the victim was involved in a hit-and-run incident.
Luckily, another hit-and-run incident concluded with the apprehension of a suspected drunk driver fleeing a Tehama County wreck. The victim wan an 80-year old woman and sustained major injuries after being struck by an intoxicated driver who then fled the scene. The perpetrator was attempting to pass the victim’s Buick and misjudged the maneuver, striking the woman’s car. The Buick was catapulted across the right lanes and onto the center divider- starting a fire. The drunken driver then exited her vehicle and attempted to flee on foot but was soon apprehended.
