Thursday saw a variety of pile-ups and vehicular incidents around the Southern California area leading to extensive clean-up by California Highway Patrol. For those commuting on Interstate 5 North this morning, you may have noticed a very slow-go around 8am. It was right around the Euclid Street overpass that a Ford vehicle was forced onto an embankment after being tapped by another vehicle. The Ford was thrust onto the should so abruptly that it quickly overturned and landed on its roof. Fearing the worst, witnesses were very pleased to see the driver crawl out of the car from one of the windows. Thankfully, the driver was completely uninjured. CHP proceeded to clean up the scene which resulted in the complete closure of one lane.

A driver arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence was formally charged today with hit-and-run causing permanent injury, driving under the influence causing bodily injury, resisting arrest and driving on a suspended license. On Tuesday, the driver was driving intoxicated and struck two teenager girls. The girls were walking in a designated crosswalk when the perpetrator entered the intersection and struck them. One of the girls, 13, remains in the hospital in serious condition. The driver initially fled the scene but was found moments later hiding in a plastic trash can.

In a very threatening-looking accident yesterday, a Chrysler inexplicably veered to the right and collided with a street light before completely turning over onto the roof. Shortly after the collision, the street light feel onto the car as the driver was stuck inside the upside-down vehicle. Thankfully, the driver was able to escape to safety and sought medical treatment immediately.

With so many traffic incidents on a daily basis, Southern Californians are accustomed to spending long hours sitting in traffic and waiting for CHP to clear the roadways. We should always remember to consider those involved in accidents every time we are stuck in a traffic jam. Automobile accidents have become so commonplace in our society that it is often easy to forget just how tragic and life-altering an accident can be.

Being injured in a traffic accident can leave many cash-strapped as they pay for medical bills and car repairs. In addition to owing more than usual for co-pays and medical treatment, accident victims are often forced to miss work; sometimes without pay.
