On January 21, 2010 Toyota announced a recall of approximately 2.3 million vehicles to correct a sticking accelerator pedal problem on particular Toyota Division models. This action is separate from the ongoing recall of about 4.2 million Lexus and Toyota vehicles to lessen the chance of the accelerator pedal sticking as a result of incorrectly placed accessory floor mats. There are about 1.7 million Toyota vehicles that are currently subject to the separate recall actions.
An investigation by Toyota has revealed that there is a possibility that the accelerator pedal may in some cases return slowly to the idle position or stick in a partially depressed position. As a result of their investigation they have elected to recall the following Toyota Division vehicles: 2009, 2010 RAV4; 2009, 2010 Corolla; 2009, 2010 Matrix; 2005 – 2010 Avalon; 2007 – 2010 Camry; 2010 Highlander; 2007 – 2010 Tundra, and; 2008 – 2010 Sequoia.
Although the condition is fairly rare, when the pedal mechanism becomes worn and, under in certain situations, the accelerator pedal may unexpectedly become slower in returning to the idle position, harder to depress, or, in the worst case, become stuck in a partially depressed position.
Should a driver experience an accelerator pedal that the throttle gets stuck in a partially open position or fails to return to the idle position, the vehicle can be controlled with steady and firm application of the brakes. Do not pump the brakes repeatedly because this may deplete the vacuum assist which would then require even stronger pressure on the brake pedal. You should drive the vehicle to the nearest safe location, shut the engine shut off, and contact a Toyota dealer for assistance.
